About the Event
This module provides a basic understanding of the mythology of the Viking age as seen through the lenses of the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Norse poetry written in Iceland in the 1200s but comprising older oral material informing about pre-Christian cosmology in Western Scandinavia. We will embark on a mythological journey where we analyze the lays of the gods from the Codex Regius manuscript from a historical and literary perspective, comment on selected fragments as well as discuss the interplay between pre-Christian material and Christian interpretations using comparisons to other sources such as skaldic poetry, archaeology and runic inscriptions.
