About the Event
Previous participation and previous knowledge not required.
The ancient Maya are known throughout the world for their ability to carve intricate inscriptions into stone. In this workshop, we will follow in the footsteps of the Maya as we carve our own inscriptions into bars of soap! This 2-hr workshop will begin with a brief introduction to the Maya hieroglyphic writing system, after which we will split into breakout rooms and work on carving a small inscription in groups.
For the workshop, you will need the following: a bar of soap (Ivory preferred), toothpicks, a pencil, and tracing paper (you can also use parchment paper or baking paper for this). If you cannot obtain tracing paper or parchment paper, you can still create a glyph freehand!
This workshop will be led by Maya epigraphers Catherine Nuckols-Wilde, Emily Davis-Hale, and Ruben Morales Forte. We look forward to seeing you there!
Participants will receive links to our Live Syllabus where readings and discussions are posted in the confirmation email after registration.
